Signs & symptoms of heart failure in children

Symptoms

  1. Recurrent chest infection - due to pulm. congestion
  2. Delayed growth - due to increase metabolic demand
  3. Reduced effort tolerance - tachypneic, sweating, poor feeding
  4. Failure to thrive

Signs

  1. Tachypneic
  2. Tachycardic
  3. Weak peripheral pulse
  4. Prolonged CRT
  5. Cardiomegaly - displaced apex beat
  6. Gallop rhythm - S3 & S4
  7. Hepatomegaly - liver congestion
Attention!

No bibasal crepitations, bilateral LL edema, or increased JVP in children

Warning!

Signs of pulmonary hypertension:

  1. Left parasternal heave
  2. Palpable P2
