Abnormal airway noises

  • aka noisy breathing
  1. Wheezing - whistling sound during expiration, due to narrow airways
  2. Stridor - high-pitched inspiratory sound, due to upper airway obstruction e.g croup
  3. Stertor - low-pitched inspiratory sound typically produced by nasal or nasopharyngeal obstruction. e.g. snoring, nasal congestion

*Grunting - exhaling with glottis partially closed to increase end-expiratory pressure
